HOMESTEAD FARM: BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS AND FRESH SUMMER FRUITS IN MARYLAND

The large abundant fields of Homestead Farm were the setting for my family's annual tradition of summer fruit picking. Waiting for us were peach tree orchards, rows of blueberry bushes, and the most colorful flower patch filled with sunflowers and zinnias. Not only does this massive property have plenty of seasonal produce to pick yourself throughout the year. But there is also a market selling pre-picked fruits and veggies, a small cafe, as well as friendly farm animals! We spent the morning wandering the fields, picking our very own flower bouquet, and harvesting the freshest fruits. The photos below are just a glimpse of the fun we had at this picturesque farm!

Useful info to know beforehand:

  • $3 admission per person to enter the farm, not required if just visiting the market

  • Produce is sold separately, you must buy what you pick

  • You are welcome to bring your own container or purchase one there

A Vibrant Flower Patch at Homestead Farm

We were originally heading towards the blueberry fields when we saw this gorgeous area of land. But we didn't expect to find such a beautifully thriving patch of sunflowers and zinnias! For $6, we could put together our own bouquet, with the option to mix and match flowers. Even if it was a fairly small patch, we felt like the long rows of plants stretched almost endlessly.

Blueberry Picking

This is a summer activity that our whole family enjoys, but most especially my mom. I think she enjoys being able to eat fruit that she harvested with her own hands, so our blueberry picking experience at Homestead Farm turned out to be wonderful! Since the area was so wide, there were plenty of bushes to pick from, without feeling crowded. Also the berries were perfectly ripe, a refreshing snack to eat fresh or on top of a smoothie bowl for breakfast!

Peach Picking & Summer Baking

Nearby the entrance to the farm, there is a tractor that drives people to and from the peach orchard. It turned out to be a lovely scenic ride amongst the trees, much more convenient than walking for a while under the hot sun. All that was left to do was fill our basket with peaches before taking home our harvest. But of course, no day of fruit picking is complete without my mom baking something sweet. And since she is such a fantastic baker, I admit that the blueberry pie she made from scratch did not last in our house past the second day!
