BROOKSIDE GARDENS: A FREE FLORAL PARADISE IN MARYLAND

One gorgeous and peaceful escape into nature that I always enjoy spending time in is Brookside Gardens. This 50-acre property includes several outdoor spaces displaying the most colorful and thriving flowers and plants. Since it's open all year round and free to visit, there's always an opportunity to witness nature's beauty here in Maryland. Also, it's definitely worth mentioning just how clean and well-kept the grounds are. From the way they design the colors and layouts of every garden, to the pristine conditions of the entire property.

It's always a must for me to visit during spring and summer, as there is an incredible rotation of flora to admire in just two seasons. (But if you're curious about what's on display throughout the year, view this in-depth list of seasonal blooms.) Here are some of the views and details that await you on your future visit!

Spring in Brookside Gardens

March: Cherry Blossoms

While endless crowds flock to the Tidal Basin in DC during cherry blossom season, Brookside is a local and easygoing alternative to enjoy these flowering trees. There are a few giant ones in the open field, a perfect place to spend the afternoon with a book. Also a few flower buds start to appear on plants dispersed throughout the garden areas.

April: Daffodils, Tulips

I always feel hopeful when I see plants sprouting as the weather gradually begins to warm up. And for me, daffodils are the first sign of a long awaited spring. Brookside has a few gardens with a mix of daffodils and tulips. Though in many other areas there are tulips of only one color. So I imagine it is like experiencing tulip fields in somewhere like the Netherlands, even if on a smaller scale.

May: Wisteria

For the past few years, this has been my number one motivation for visiting Brookside. I have a soft spot for wisteria tunnels, and this fragrant cascading plant in general. Since it reminds me of a garden I discovered during my studies abroad in Florence, which also has an incredible tunnel like this. I was excited to find somewhere local where I can smell that heavenly scent and appreciate my favorite flower.

Summer in Brookside Gardens

June: Roses, Hydrangeas, Azaleas

The rose garden is such a gorgeous sight to see, with blooms of every color interspersed among other flowering plants and greenery. It's right next to the wisteria tunnel. Also stone pathways weave around and create the perfect long walk in the park.

The Visitors Center always showcases thriving plant displays outside. Meanwhile inside you'll find a gift shop and even an art exhibition space!

When walking the dirt pathways through the trees, you'll see vibrant azalea bushes and hydrangea shrubs showing off their colors at peak bloom.

Brookside has more than enough sitting areas to relax and take in all the beauty. From gazebos to wooden benches by the fountains to wide open grass. Visitors are encouraged to stay awhile and be immersed in nature.
